- Lt Col Dennis Mellen, USAF Ret
- Jim Schake, Director of Operations United Airlines - IAD
Joy is a number one best-selling author, keynote speaker, operations manager for United Airlines with a master’s in aeronautics, and a pilot. Her story was featured on FOX and CBS TV, and she has been interviewed on top rated podcasts.
Joy shares her experience as the lone survivor of a fatal plane crash. When others told her she would never walk again, she proved that she would do more than that: she would dance again.
The plane crash broke every extremity, threatening to destroy everything she had worked for. Joy’s journey brought her through paralysis, multiple surgeries, and accident investigations. For her, mediocrity is synonymous with failure, and limits are something to be redefined and conquered.
I love all things aviation and travel! I have loved them ever since I was a kid, believing that I would one day be a fighter pilot. Two years after my accident, I graduated with a Master's degree in Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University. I hold a B.S in Air Traffic Management from LeTourneau University, have my private pilot license, and hold an aircraft dispatch certificate. I have worked in the airline industry for nine years and am based in Northern Virginia, working for United Airlines.
When I'm not at work or traveling to speaking engagements, which let's face it... that takes up most of my time, I enjoy baking, travelling, singing along to random music, and salsa dancing.
I love encouraging others to feel valued, empowered, and confident. Often, I do this by baking chocolate chip cookies or cupcakes. More recently my conduit is speaking and writing about secrets to flourishing through change.
